But In Brazil...

A man has reportedly died in Brazil after jumping into a lake to escape bees, only to drown and be eaten by piranhas.

The 30-year-old was fishing with friends when he jumped into a farm lake in the municipality of Brasilandia de Minas on Sunday, according to the local Fire Department.

There are about 30 piranha species in the world; all live in South America's Amazon River basin.

The Pew Research Center survey , conducted Sept. 13-19, found that the share of adults who now say spending on policing should increase has risen to 47%, up from 31% in June 2020. And 21% of those say funding should increase a lot, while just 11% said the same last summer.  The results come amid a mounting public concern over violent crime nationally, with 61% of adults in July 2021 saying violent crime is a big problem in the country, while just 41% said the same a year prior. An FBI report released last month found that homicides were up nearly 30% in 2020, the biggest one-year increase on record, while cities from Philadelphia to Portland, Oregon, to Jackson, Mississippi, are approaching or surpassing homicide records in 2021.   https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/the-share-of-americans-who-want-more-police-spending-is-growing-poll-says/ar-AAPYUg0 Although we rarely see police around here, it's good to know that they're close by. https://news.wsu.edu/p...

Drug Use Climbing In US, Deaths As Well

Image
. The Biden administration is rolling out a new coordinated strategy it hopes will slow the menacing rise in drug overdose deaths. According to the latest preliminary data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly 100,000 people in the U.S. died from overdoses over a 12-month period, a massive surge from a year earlier. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra said the overdose epidemic has grown so severe that new measures are needed to keep people with addiction alive. New federal research also shows that more people in the U.S. have been using drugs during the pandemic, putting them at high risk of overdose and death.   A major focus of the Biden administration's plan is on expanding federal support and coordination of harm reduction strategies for people actively using dangerous drugs. "If you can't prevent someone from becoming a user, then at least prevent them from harming themselves to the point of death," Becer...

Guess Where The COVID Waste Has Been Going

During the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 28,000 tons (25,000 metric tons) of pandemic-related plastic waste, such as masks and gloves, have ended up in the ocean, according to a new study.  That's more than 2,000 double-decker buses  worth of waste,  The Guardian reported . And within a few years, a portion of those plastic gloves and packaging materials from pandemic purchases could be swirling around the North Pole. The analysis found that 193 countries produced about 9.2 million tons (8.4 million metric tons) of pandemic-associated plastic waste from the start of the pandemic to mid-August 2021, according to The Guardian.  The majority of the plastic — about 87.4% — was used by hospitals, while 7.6% was used by individuals. Packaging and test kits accounted for about 4.7% and 0.3% of the waste, respectively, the authors reported in a recent study, published online on Nov. 8 in the journal  Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences . Do not hospita...
