The Pew Research Center survey, conducted Sept. 13-19, found that the share of adults who now say spending on policing should increase has risen to 47%, up from 31% in June 2020. And 21% of those say funding should increase a lot, while just 11% said the same last summer.

The results come amid a mounting public concern over violent crime nationally, with 61% of adults in July 2021 saying violent crime is a big problem in the country, while just 41% said the same a year prior. An FBI report released last month found that homicides were up nearly 30% in 2020, the biggest one-year increase on record, while cities from Philadelphia to Portland, Oregon, to Jackson, Mississippi, are approaching or surpassing homicide records in 2021.

Although we rarely see police around here, it's good to know that they're close by.
